The course offers a thorough grounding in the major branches of Civil Engineering but with a focus on aspects most relevant to Structural Engineering. The aims of the course are similar to those for Civil Engineering but with a stronger emphasis on the analysis, skills and knowledge appropriate to Structural Engineering design. In addition, the course aims to cultivate skills for the creative development of designs for construction projects. An unrivalled range of specialist options is available in Year 5 and students complete a professional design project.
Civil and structural Engineering involves the design, construction and maintenance and repair infrastructure such as roads and bridges, buildings, and underground transport systems.
You’ll develop a broad knowledge of geotechnical, structural, environmental and management aspects of civil engineering, and gain the computing, mathematical, drawing and communication skills you need as an engineer.
This programme builds on many of the fundamental concepts of civil and environmental engineering including the application of scientific knowledge and modern engineering tools to the analysis, design, construction and maintenance of all major forms of infrastructure. The discipline of Civil Engineering is very wide ranging, impacting on our daily lives in diverse ways. Ultimately it aims to ensure a sustainable local and global society, particularly in light of current challenges such as global climate change.
